07 Dec POPPY BIRTHDAY BLESSINGS
It’s been a while since my last card and post. I’ve been hard at work creating new stamp sets and collaborating with my engineer brother on a special project. I am so thrilled about our project but I will talk more about it in the weeks to come.
For today’s card I went back to my lists of unused stamps and techniques and selected something from each. I chose a stamp from Simon Says Stamp called Poppies Background. The technique I decided to try is the “black background technique” that I first saw Yana Smakula use on a card and it was gorgeous. By the way, Yana Smakula’s cards are amazing, click the link to go to her website. Her card that inspired the card I made for today is below:
Back to today’s card. I avoided using the Poppies Background stamp for a long time because it requires a lot of coloring with Copics which I traditionally haven’t been the best at, but I have gotten better recently with more practice. So, I accepted the challenge to myself and finally used it today. I decided to make a 6×6 card because I couldn’t imagine going through the time and effort of coloring the stamp and then cutting parts of it off to make a much smaller card. I also decided to turn the card into a birthday card for a friend whose birthday is in December.
I wanted to color the image with Copic Sketch Markers, so I used my MISTI and stamped it with Memento Tuxedo Black ink. I colored the poppy petals using Copic markers R35/R37/R39. For the poppy centers I used Y06 and colored the stems and leaves using YG03/YG25/G28. After coloring the image, I hesitated to proceed with blacking out its background because I was concerned that I might not like it as well as I originally thought. And let’s face it, I didn’t want to color the image again. However, I pressed on taking a leap of faith and used the Copic marker Black 100 and colored the background spaces around the poppies. And I am 100% glad I did because I REALLY like the final product. I should have known Yana Smakula wouldn’t lead me down the wrong path.
After I colored the image and blacked out its background, I put it back into my MISTI and stamped it again with VersaFine Onyx Black ink and embossed it with Mystic Fire embossing powder from B&J’s Art Stamps. This embossing power, which I absolutely love, has a glittery Bling to it and everyone knows I like my cards with a little Bling. I also sprayed the card front with Iridescent Glitter Dust per usual and then also added Diamond Stickles to the Poppy centers. Next, I matted it using Fairway Stardream Metallic, 8l-pound text cardstock and mounted it to a Crystal Stardream Metallic 105-pound cover card base.
The sentiment I used for the card’s front as well as its inside sentiment are both from the Iris-Inspired Stamps, Birthday Set. Both sentiments are pictured below:
It’s hard to see the Bling or shimmer of the card in photos but in the picture below the light flecks on some of the Poppy Petal outlines that look like dust is actually some of the glitter effect of the embossing powder. The entire image outline has a glittery look that sparkles, although not visible in the photos.
That’s all for now. Until next time:
Stamp Yourself Happy!
