26 May Birthday Card Bonanza!
You have already seen two of the seven Birthday Cards I made for my brother this year and today I am showing you the remaining five. The approach I took for his birthday cards this year was to make them visually appealing, themed to match one of his many talents, or created using an interesting technique. He’s an overall brainiac and a mechanical engineer, which I translate for some reason into geometric designs, he’s an Author, and a seamster among other things.
Perhaps my favorite of the seven cards is the one that celebrates him as an Author. Go get “Mark of the Beast”, by William Johnson on Amazon. It’s a great crime thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. I wrote the names of the other books he has written on the spines of the orange books on the card but those aren’t yet available.
For this card I used the Hero Arts, “Book Stacks Bold Print“ background stamp which I heat embossed and colored with Copic Markers. Then I decided to make the background of the stamp black using the Black 100 Copic marker to make the books pop even more. I brought the Bling again using Thermoweb’s, “Iridescent Glitter Dust” to make it sparkle.
Given that he’s a seamster, I decided to make a sewing themed card using the Lawn Fawn, “Sewn With Love”, stamp and matching diecut sets. This was a fun card to make. I decided I would do something different with the background to make it more interesting so I masked a portion of it and used Twisted Citron, Distress Ink to cover the right edge and then used Wilted Violet, Distress Ink to stamp the splattered appearing background on the left using the My Favorite Things, “Distressed Patterns” stamp set. I love all things Bling so I used Stickles generously on the sewing items I diecut and placed them on the card front where the two different backgrounds meet.
Next, I used my Simon Says Stamp, “Mod Circle” background diecut because of the interesting geometric design it creates. His favorite color is orange so I wanted to use colors that would look good with that color in particular. This was a simple card that only required die-cutting the background 4 times and then paper piecing.
The third card was made using the “Ghosting” technique and was designed and originally made by Darlene Design.com years ago before she changed to a paid website. It was a bit more feminine than perhaps a guy would like but I like the technique. For this card I stamped two of the flowers and the leaves from the retired Stampin’ Up, Secret Garden stamp set on Stampin’ Up, Crumb Cake cardstock. I used Picked Raspberry, Distress ink for the flowers and Bundled Sage Distress Ink for the leaves. I did all of the “Ghosting” with Colorbox Frost White Ink which I don’t think is still available. I used the Derwent Inktense, Fuschia and Light Olive Pencils to do some detailing of the flower petals and leaves. And of course, I sprayed the pieces with the Thermoweb, Iridescent Glitter Dust to provide some Bling before mounting them to black glossy cardstock and then the card front.
The final card is another card designed by Darlene Design.com years ago. I made it using my retired Hero Arts Doily stamp, white embossing powder, Peeled Paint/Tea Dye/Worn Lipstick Distress Ink, and black sheer ribbon.
That’s it folks. You have now seen ALL seven of the Birthday cards I made for my brother this year. Let me know what you think. And until next time:
